semantic amplification, polysemy, metaphor, Hebrew LanguageAbstract
This work analyses the relationship between the several periods of the linguistic stratification of Hebrew language and the lexical amplification by semantic amplification. The different periods of the Jewish exile have partial
responsibility in the current polysemy in Modern Hebrew. Then we discuss polysemy and metaphor in the (tsv“a) root (this means ‘color’). The analysis is based on concepts of cognitive semantics and sociolinguistics. We discuss
the metaphor’s role in the semantic expansion and the relationship between it and the polysemy in the Hebrew language.
