Abstract

To evaluate voiding dysfunction symptoms in subjects with cerebral palsy (CP) and their relationship with variables such as: neurologic diagnosis, age, sex, the fact of having received or not prenatal care, birth weight, walking, speech, cognitive involvement, constipation and previous urinary tract infection (UTI), besides verifying, among the studied cases, the presence of neurogenic bladder. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study, whitch evaluated one hundred patients aged between 2-18 years diagnosed with CP who attended pediatric appointments in the outpatient clinic of Pediatrics of the Associação de Assistência à Criança Deficiente – AACD (Association of Assistence to the Handicapped Child), without severe mental deficiency. All these patients were submitted to IQ Tests, Pediatric Interview besides Urodynamic Study. Results: After recruiting and examining one hundred subjects with CP aged 2-18 years, the present study found 30 cases with urinary symptoms. Eleven of these cases were diagnosed as neurogenic bladder. Among the variables analysed, only the mean age (9,35 years) has shown statistically significant relation with urinary tract dysfunction. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with CP presented voiding dysfunction symptoms irrespective of the variables presented, except for the age, which might be related to the lower degree of their dementia and motor function diagnoses. Among the patients with urinary symptoms, 11 presented urodynamic studies compatible with neurogenic bladder (36,67%). The early urinary tract dysfunctional diagnosis is intended to avoid possible alteration of the Upper Urinary Tract. Also, it represents a preventive treatment for such patients, allowing them a better quality of life, hence contributing to their rehabilitation and integration into society.
