Comparison of two “ideal doses” of stretching exercises

Abstract

Comparison of two “ideal doses” of stretching exercises. Despite it’s widespread utilization there is little research on stretching exercises‘ number and duration of repetitions to be utilized in a section of exercises and its chronic effects. With the aim of comparing two “ideal doses” of stretching exercises (number and duration) suggested in methodologically different experiments we made a before-after designed study with 8 individuals (6 men, 2 women) aged 22 to 33. At first we made the goniometric measure of each knee’s maximal extension with hip flexed to 90º, than we divided the sample in a control group with 3 individuals and a test group with 5 individuals that realized a hamstring stretching exercise: in right inferior limb, 1 repetition of 30 seconds and in left inferior limb, 4 repetitions of 18s. After exercising 3 times a week for 3 weeks, we made new goniometric measurements. The paired T-test showed significant improvement in range of movement (ROM) of both left inferior limbs group (4 repetitions of 18 s) and right inferior limbs group (1 repetition of 30 s) and no improvement in control group. The T-test didn’t show statistical difference between right inferior limb and left inferior limb‘s ROM improvement, what suggests equal e effectiveness of both “doses” to hamstrings.
