Assessment of the level of clinical reasoning demonstrated by Physiotherapy students based on SOLO taxonomy

Abstract

Objective: To assess the clinical reasoning skills of Physical Therapy students using the SOLO Taxonomy (Structure of Observed Learning Outcome). Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out at a public university in Minas Gerais. Students from the 6th, 8th and 10th periods of the physical therapy program solved two clinical cases in orthopedic-trauma physical therapy. Three expert evaluators analyzed the data. Results: Seventy-four students participated, with 41.9% from the 10th period. In the Clinical Case I, all participants (100%) identified the clinical diagnosis correctly, while 33.8% fully identified the physiotherapy diagnosis. For clinical criteria, 82.5% showed superficial reasoning. For physiotherapy criteria, 54.1% showed superficial reasoning. In the Clinical Case II, all participants (100%) correctly identified both the clinical and physiotherapy diagnoses. Deep-level reasoning was observed in 13.5% for clinical criteria and 4.1% for physiotherapy criteria. For treatment planning, all students (100%) demonstrated deep-level reasoning in both cases. Diagnostic reasoning improved across semesters for orthopedics case. Conclusion: The students demonstrated deep-level reasoning for physiotherapy treatment planning. For clinical and physiotherapy diagnoses, reasoning improved across periods for the orthopedic case and remained consistent for the traumatology one.
