Abstract

This article deals with Italian immigrants in São Paulo between 1880 and 1920. Most were brought at state expense to supply cheap labor for the coffee plantations. The grim conditions they encountered are described and analysed. Italian immigrants also formed the first industrial working class in the city of São Paulo, and the article seeks to consider some implications of this fact.
