Capitu, Lucíola and Isaura

a feminist retelling of 19th century Brazilian literature

Abstract

The present work has an analytical character from the works of Machado de Assis “Dom Casmurro”, Bernardo Guimarães “A escrava Isaura” and José de Alencar with “Lucíola”. The text discusses the female construction within the Brazilian literature of the 19th century, seeking to list the performances that bring through the creation of the characters the trend of revolution of women within society based on imagination with an intrinsic relationship with reality. In this sense, the feminism present in the female characters of the works is questioned, possessing desires and perspectives. With a theoretical contribution building the relationships between literature and feminist movements that emerged in the 18th century in France, and later the creation of romantic literature in Brazil in the third decade of the 19th century. In the second part, an analysis of each work is carried out, seeking in each character the protagonism in the face of social criticism, subverting the impositions of the century and society
