The temporality of prints and the time for writing: 19th century almanacs andcalendars in Río de La Plata

The popularization of almanacs and calendars was a phenomenon that characterized printed culture in the 19th century. They were an everyday element that only in recent years began to capture the interest of researchers. Based on the survey of a limited corpus of almanacs published in Río de la Plata, we explore the intersection between temporalities, the materiality of the prints, and the practice of appropriation by their readers —people who left marks, notes, and reflections on their pages. Almanacs and calendars are privileged printed materials for observing technical transformations, political ups and downs and the shifts in the daily life of an increasingly diverse reading public. The analysis of the changes and permanences in this type of long-lasting printed material —strongly associated with generic conventions— allows us to appreciate the novelties and continuities in the daily life of ordinary audiences.
