Abstract

In spite of the fact that Machado de Assis is considered one of the great writers of the nineteenth century, outside Brasil his work does not have the diffusion or the recognition it deserves. This essay enumerates the history of the availlable translations of his novels and short stories in Spanish, analyzes the quality of some of those translations, and reflects, on the causes of the limited reception hi literary works have in Latin America.

    (Cuba, 1950). Doutor espanhol pela Florida International University. Autor de Cercanía de Lezama Lima, Lo que opina el otro, El Peregrino en Comarca Ajena, Virgilio Piñera en persona, Bibliografía de Lino Novás Calvo, y Del buen uso de las enfermedades. Atualmente trabalha como professor na Mississippi State University.
