Elementar, meu caro mestre: cinema, literatura e educação medieval no filme O nome da rosa (1986)

This article focuses on teaching and learning in the Middle Ages, as represented in the film The Name of the Rose, released in 1986, directed by the Jean-Jacques Annaud, a French filmmaker specialist in works with a historical theme. Film director as the Quest for Fire (1981), The Lover (1991) and Enemy at the Gates (2001). The film is an adaptation of the homonymous novel by the Italian writer Umberto Eco. In this investigative suspense narrative, we will analyze the relation between master (the Franciscan monk Guilherme de Baskerville, inspired by historical figures and police fiction) and disciple (the novice Adso de Melk, inspired by the narrator of Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain), based on teaching of the seven liberal arts (the Trivium and the Quadrivium), according to medieval tradition.
