With the realization - via a research project carried out in São Paulo public schools, with elementary and high school teachers - that the means of communication and their cultural products have marked presence in teacher and student lives, the author emphasizes the importance of creating critical dialogue between formal discourse produced in the teaching space and the non-didactic discourses produced by the means of communication. Through this the school can recover its role in forming the citizen.
