Time and gravity: borrowing a poetic vocabulary from dance

The article brings forth a mode of poetic reading that concentrates on its bodily effects, considering the poetic experience, even in silent reading, as something on the realm of performance, by which we encounter alterities. I approach the advent of modern poetry and the rise of modern dance as twin events, focusing on their conflicts with the limits of each instrument of expression – language and body. I approximate poetic theory and modern dance theory, borrowing from the later reflections on elements such as movement, space and, above all, weight and time. Finally, I propose an experimental reading of two modern Portuguese poems, by Camilo Pessanha and Mário de Sá-Carneiro.
