After the release of Da Lama ao Chaos (1994), the debut album by the band Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, from Recife, the artistic rise of the Manguebit movement broadly exposed its interestetic proposal of harmonically bringing together different artistic expressions. Chico Science, using this proposal, builds the concept of the Crab-men, based on the work Homens e caranguejos (1967), by Josué de Castro, also from Recife, to complement the plural atmosphere of his music. We intend here to explore this approximation between Science and Castro, seeking to identify and analyze their references, drawing on the bakhtinian view present in “The problem of content, material and form in literary creation” (2010) and Popular culture in the Middle Ages and in Renaissance: the context of François Rabelais / Mikhail Bakhtin (1987).
