Abstract

The recently released translation of Tom Zé's biography, written by Pietro Scaramuzzo, brings numerous unpublished details about the artist's life. The book spans the more than eighty years between the family setting in Irará before Antônio José Santana Martins was born, in 1936, and the 2017 album Sem você não A. Information that was previously obscure regarding the production of each album or the backstage of record labels is finally accessible, thanks to extensive research work and the interviews Scaramuzzo conducted with Tom Zé and important characters in his trajectory, such as David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Arto Lindsay. In this review, we look at one aspect in particular: the construction of the narrator in relation to the protagonist – and the implications of this for the biographical form.
