This study focuses on literary criticism and aims at questioning the forms of nationalization in the commentary, that is to say all different manners of commenting on a text in the light of a national space. This study therefore gathers a set of critical studies on epic poetry that all use the notion of “national epic” in their vocabulary: to what extent can literary criticism presume the existence of a generic category called "national epic", then refer to it and use it as an hermeneutic tool, without actually naming it? Contemporary discourses will be contrasted with a set of late nineteenth-century studies, all of which are determined by a nationalist way of thinking.
Keywords: literary criticism; literary genre; epic poem; nation.
