In this essay, the fundamental question of the studies of literature is inquired. The objective is to try to explore the functionalities of literature when “authoritarian times” are evoked. After all, it is said that it is predominantly in moments like these that the humanist role of literature emerges to fight “barbarism”. But what does this actually mean in a society that is characterized by updating or producing new ways of subalternizing those who are excluded from the norm, from identity?
