The first part of The Preparation of the Novel, the last course held by Roland Barthes at the Collège de France, is almost entirely dedicated to the Eastern haiku. More precisely, the haiku is elected as a formal model for his writing to come. This paper sustains the hypothesis that, in such process, Barthes reviews the connections between writing, history and subjectivity, common to his work, through a different perspective from his early writings, in which history was emphasized. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the way the essayist sketches a different kind of knowledge, characteristic to writing. Secondly, the temporality of the haiku itself, very close to Nietzsche’s second Untimely Meditation.
