Female body representations in Mozambican poetry: from fetters to freedom

In the last decades, the female body has been reframed as an analytic category and seen in its socio-historic wholeness, and not only as merely biological condition. We know that the female body in general has been exploited and repressed in many ways throughout the historic process of societal structuration; nonetheless, the black body was the most vilified, and has been exposed to various violations, even in its ontological dimension. Based on this premise, the aim of this study is to analyze the lyrical production of five Mozambican female poets – Lica Sebastião, Sónia Sultuane, Melita Matsinhe, Rinkel and Deusa d’África – trying to deconstruct this historical imaginary of subjugation from possible representations of eroticized and freed bodies in contemporary poems. To support this study, we have used the body typology theory of Elódia Xavier (2007), Hooks (2019), among other authors.
