This paper intends to analyze some aspects that denote the complexity of the novel Eu
sou uma lésbica (1983), by Cassandra Rios, facing three directions: the social elements of the time
when the novel was produced, the confrontation of two consciences, and the identification of erotic
thoughts and actions in the language of the narrator. We intend to approach how the Brazilian
society of the 1980s viewed women and how this factor influenced the author at the time of writing
the novel, because there is the presence of female characters who follow the heteronormative
standard at the same time as there are those seen as transgressors. We rely on the theory of Butler
(2002), Freud (2014), and Bakhtin (2011) for an investigation of content and language
