In this article, two fados – Mãe preta and Barco negro – are analyzed and compared, whose different lyrics – which are, however, based on the same melodic basis – refer, respectively, to an Afro-Brazilian and a Portuguese lyrical-thematic matrix. From this specific case, it is intended to highlight the crucial, although controversial, interrelationship that exists between these two fados and the Portuguese-speaking imagery typical of Portugal, Brazil and the PALOP.
