Early childhood intervention and school achievement in Brazil: evidences from a home visiting program

This research evaluates the effects of an early childhood home-based program on the academic achievement of 5th grade students of elementary schools, particularly on the students’ performance in mathematics and language (Brazilian Portuguese). We examine the program Primeira Infância Melhor — PIM (“Better Early Childhood”), operative in the state of Rio Grande do Sul since 2003. We found positive impacts of the program on students’ achievement in mathematics for children who received the intervention up to three years old. The study identified that the mechanisms behind our results are related to the parents’ encouragement for children to carry out school activities.
