Abstract

By using Grossman’s health production function theoretical framework, this paper investigates the components associated with the mental health status of Brazilian adolescents and the impact of the Health at School Program (PSE) on such status. Our findings indicate that (female) sex, risky behavior, and exposure to bullying contributed negatively to adolescent mental well-being, while healthy eating and positive self-assessments of health and body imagery acted as psycho-emotional protecting factors. Results also identified the PSE’s beneficial impact on school mental health, primarily in its protective role against boys’ levels of loneliness. We highlight the potential imperative role of the PSE in protecting the psychosocial status of Brazilian teenage schoolchildren, especially against socioeconomic and demographic disadvantages.
