The effects of horizontal mismatch on wages: evidence from Ceará

Abstract

We analyze the impact of the mismatch between the training area and the activity of students from vocational schools in Ceará on their wages in the formal labor market. Data from 2015 and 2019 are used in the Heckprobit model combined with the Mincerian equation. The results show that an increase in the probability of mismatch by 1 pp reduces expected gains by 43,2% in the short term (2015) and a persistence in the effect of the mismatch on the wage premium. The allocation inefficiency of these professionals leads to a low socioeconomic return and suboptimal application of public
resources.
