The paper presents the results of a multilateral price index calculated for the 11 Brazilian metropolitan regions for the period 1981-1999. It allows for the comparison of cost of living levels among all regions simultaneously. The results indicate a high variance in cost of living levels among the regions for all years. In 1999, the differential between the cheapest and the most expensive metropolitan region was of 30%. The analysis indicates that the cost of living differentials among Brazilian metropolitan regions are very high and must be considered in any study of regional inequalities, poverty lines etc. in the country.
