The purpose of this study is to explore a series of issues relating to the female-headed household within a number of levels. First, to describe the female headed household and then to compare single female household heads and married women within one community. Second, to examine this relationship over a substancial period of cronological time. Finally, this relationship will be examined with a comparative context involving a number of communities. The geographic focus of this essay is Minas Gerais in nineteenth century.
