Abstract

Income policies, in the past, were often mentioned as a way to reconcile full employment with price stability. This was not a purely academic debate. Many countries applied incomes policies, either permanently or intermitently, after the Second World War. Criticism of interventionist ideas and policies, that gathered momentum by the end of the VO's engendered a prior belief that incomes policies were inherently inefficient and ultimately unsustainable. This paper seeks to recuperate the debate on incomes policies, both by analysing the theoretical case in their favor and by evaluating some of the cases in which they were actually implemented.
