Small innovative firms, Technology incubators, R&DAbstract
There has been a particular interest in the growth oftechnology incubators in Brazil. However, basic knowledge about how small technology-based firms actually undertake innovative activities remains limited. Thus, this paper provides more Information on the financial constraints faced by small firms and describes some strategies for survival and development. First, a literature review about the relationship between firm size and innovative activity is considered, emphasizing that small firms play an active role in innovation. Second, some characteristics ofsmall technology-based firms are presented, based on a sample ofBrazilian technology incubators. like a very high research intensity, as well as other statistics. Moreover, the R&D expenditures seem to increase less than proportionately with sales.
