Bullying and suicidal ideation among school-aged adolescents inBrazil

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between bullying and suicidal ideation among school-aged adolescents in Brazil, controlling for specific factors related to individuals, family and friends, school, diet and physical activities, as well as the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, and regional and economic characteristics. Data from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE, 2019) were used, estimating models through the ordered probit method. It was found that bullying can be considered an associated factor for suicidal ideation in both urban and rural areas. The predisposition to develop suicidal ideation is greater among girls, in capitals, and in urban areas. Among the reasons for engaging in bullying, sexual orientation stands out. In this regard, evidence suggests that a positive school environment, with greater attention and a lower incidence of intimidating practices, is a protective factor and, consequently, mitigates the effects of bullying on the mental health of young individuals.
