In this paper we discuss the role of linguistic and discursive studies, particularly the study of discursive semiotics, in teaching and learning practices. We show that some of the knowledge developed in discursive semiotics about intolerance in and of language, about the constitution of acceptance speeches, contrary to prejudicial and hateful ones, and mainly discourses about the truth and lie in texts is a good path to deal with these matters in schools. The main reason for this is that, in order for there to be acceptance of social differences, in order for social and discursive change to have great impact, in order for children and teen to learn how to read internet text and discern the lie behind most of them, it is paramount that this body of knowledge lead to critical thinking, because, without schools, expected discursive and social changes simply do not happen or do not have the desired impact.
