Peirce’s semiotics applied to architectural graphic representation

The aim of this article is to discuss architectural drawing in the light of Peirce's semiotics. By consulting the author's original works and those of two of the main Brazilian researchers focused on his work, Lúcia Santaella and Lucy Niemeyer, we elucidate some of his concepts and their application to the graphic representation of architecture, which is one of the forms of non-verbal communication used by the architect in communicating the project to their interlocutors. The concept of sign is introduced, as well as its formative triadic structure (representamen, object, and interpretant). Subsequently, drawings are divided into two types, according to their relationship with the architectural object they represent, called notational and imaginative. Examples of drawings from each category are analyzed separately, so that Peirce's concepts emerge as required. Finally, a discussion is presented on the suitability of each type of drawing for communication objectives.
