This article examines the lyrics and melody of Gilberto Gil’s song “Back in Bahia”, drawing on Greimas’s semiotic framework, Zilberberg’s reflections on tensivity and Tatit’s contributions to the study of popular song. Situating the piece within the context of its production – including a critical reflection on the limitations of analyses restricted to biographical grounds – the study further demonstrates how the rhythmic regularities of the lyrics interact with a melodic line characterized by predictability, thereby establishing a dynamic interplay between presences and absences, conjunctions and disjunctions, euphorias and dysphorias, London and Bahia.
