The supervillain’s semiosphere: symbolic connections between chaos and evil

Abstract

This study proposes a semiotic-cultural approach to understanding the supervillain as a central operator in the dynamics of superhero comic book narratives, grounded in Yuri Lotman’s cultural semiotics. It argues that the supervillain constitutes an autonomous system of signification within comic-book culture, endowed with its own codes, texts, memories, and expressive forms, whose function is to tension and energize the borders of heroic order. The analysis also incorporates anti-types (antiheroes and antivillains) as elements that complicate the system by expanding the dynamics that occur at its boundaries through zones of moral ambiguity between good and evil. These characters, positioned at the peripheries of the semiosphere, introduce moral paradoxes that reconfigure the structured center of the classical hero, revealing the permeability of cultural frontiers. The study mobilizes the concepts of semiosis, text, system, and boundary to demonstrate that the supervillain not only threatens order but also enables it by stimulating continuous processes of self-definition and symbolic renewal. The findings indicate that the villainous semiosphere functions as its own semiotic system, responsible for generating new meanings, codes, and ruptures. The study concludes that the supervillain and its anti-types are indispensable elements for the vitality, transformation, and expansion of comic-book culture.
