The aim of this article is to discuss the theoretical and methodological contributions of Yuri Lotman’s Semiotics of Culture to studies of mass popular music. The starting points are the systemic notion of culture and the concept of the semiosphere, understood as a diverse and dynamic communicative space of translation and meaning production. The concepts of the cultural/artistic text and cultural memory are presented as powerful tools for understanding the translation processes of popular music within the realm of media cultures. The formation of the Tartu-Moscow School is briefly revisited, followed by studies that update the Semiotics of Culture in the context of communication and the language of song in media environments. Mass popular song, a borderland object that is heterogeneous and dynamic, is examined across three fields of semiosis: (a) as an intersemiotic object at the intersection of poetic-verbal, sonic-musical, and visual-performative languages; (b) as a text within media culture that reverberates meanings both as a media product, subject to the systemic logics of consumption, and as a translator of memory through the activation of ancestral cultural signs; and (c) as a media text situated at a dialogical intersection with visual languages (album covers, music videos) and technological materialities (records, studios, digital platforms).
