Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Social Movements

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have revolutionized multiple aspects of human life over the past two decades. From reconfigurations of the world of work to new ways of consuming, from new models of education and distance learning to different ways of establishing emotional bonds, digital platforms—and social media, more specifically—have also become fundamental territories for the production and dissemination of ideas, the construction of collective identities, and intervention in public debate. Despite all the contradictions surrounding the virtual world, which today perhaps resembles more a collection of digital estates controlled by large private corporations than a contemporary agora or an online public square, it is generally agreed that it is a space contested by distinct political forces. It is a fact that social movements are active within it, utilizing virtuality for organizing, recruiting, communicating, and political mobilization, overcoming limitations of space and time that previously restricted their action. Although this dispute is unequal, given the logic behind Big Tech's operations, focused on profit maximization and ideologically aligned with the right, progressive sectors of organized civil society are increasingly using ICTs to intervene in public debate and the political arena. The objective of this Extraprensa dossier, therefore, is to publish articles that discuss or report experiences in this regard.
