Syncretism of a carnival in the Pearl River: the case of Macau

Abstract

The Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin affirms that the human being has the capacity to assume two different experiences in life: in one of these, men are subject to hierarchy and seek to lead a life seriously and in accordance with social standards and norms; in the other life experience, men are free of constraints. It is in this last life experience that a cultural event like Carnival comes to life. Based on the Bakhtinian principles about Carnival, we will try to understand the way cultures, identities and linguistic expressions appear in the (already disappeared) Macanese Carnival. Those cultures, identities and linguistic Macanese expressions are, in turn, the result of a cultural syncretism that allowed the formation of a culture, specifically, the Macanese.

PhD in Literary Studies - Speciality in Comparative Literature, Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (UL), and in Letters, Languages and Sciences Humaines, Spécialité: Etudes luso- brésiliennes, Université Stendhal - Grenoble III. Post-Doctorate in Sociology of Literature from the Faculty of Sciences and Letters of the State University of São Paulo (FCLAr-UNESP).
