The non-assimilatory raising of pretonic vowels /e, o/in southernBrazilian Portuguese: a contrast and enhancement approach

The paper is about the raising of pretonic mid vowels /e, o/ not triggered by a following high vowel (senhora ~ s[i]nhora ‘lady’, colher ~ c[u]lher ‘spoon’) in Porto Alegre Portuguese. The analysis is based on Purnell and Raimy (2015), Purnell, Raimy and Salmons (2019), a model that follows the contrast and enhancement approach of Hall (2011) and operates with privative phonological features, organized according to the feature geometry of Avery and Idsardi (2001). The objectives of the analysis are (i) seek, in phonological representation, motivations for the observed frequencies of rising, relatively smaller for /e/than for /o/, and (ii) represent the vowel contrasts of Brazilian Portuguese in a model with privative features little explored in the Portuguese phonology literature. The analysis shows that /o/ is more susceptible to raising because it is less marked than /e/ in the contrast system. An advantage of the used model is its implicational structure of privative features (gestures), dimensions (contrasts) and superordinate levels, which explains and restricts the phonological activity possible in the language. A limitation of the analysis was marking the Tongue Height dimension twice in the contrastive hierarchy to account for the four contrasts of height of Portuguese.
