This research investigated whether the perception of heterotonic Spanish words by Brazilian learners transforms their production. To this end, the research, which includes a perceptual training stage, has 26 Brazilian learners, 17 of whom belong to the group with less academic exposure (ten who have received training and seven who have not) and nine of whom belong to the group with more academic exposure (four who have received training and five who have not). The learners listened to heterotones spoken by Spanish speakers and then produced the same heterotones in sentences with context and vehicle sentences. Spearman’s correlation tests showed that there was a greater tendency for correlation between perception and production in the group with less academic exposure and who took part in perceptual training.
