The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a great number of hospital admissions. A considerable number of cases progress to the severe form of the disease and death. The prone position maneuver is a therapeutic strategy with strong evidence of reduced mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The purpose of this study was to verify whether the prone position maneuver is used by health care professionals in the hospital to treat patients with COVID-19 on invasive mechanical ventilation and their perception of its impact on the mortality rate. This was a cross-sectional study, with a convenience sample composed of health professionals of both sexes, working in hospitals throughout Brazil. Participants answered an online questionnaire, consisting of 16 questions, using GoogleForms, from July to September 2020. Four hundred and fifty-five questionnaires were answered. The prone position maneuver is routinely performed in hospitals where 386 (95%) of the responding professionals work. Among them, 374 (96.9%) consider that the prone position maneuver reduces hypoxemia, and 289 (74.9%) reckon that it reduces the mortality of patients on invasive mechanical ventilation, with COVID-19 and ARDS. Lastly, most health professionals working in Brazilian hospitals perform and believe that the prone position maneuver reduces hypoxemia and mortality in patients on invasive mechanical ventilation, with COVID-19.
