Desindustrialization in the metropolis of São Paulo - Água Branca case

This article tries to discuss some subjects on the theme of desindustrialization in the metropolis of São Paulo. Desindustrialization is a recent process and its understanding is linked so to an integrated group of elements related to changes in the process of industrialization of Brazil as to changes in the process of urbanization of the metropolis. Therefore, ultimately, it is in the relations among industrialization processes and urbanization that we glimpse the comprehension, although partial, of the recent process of verified desindustrialization. However, desindustrialization is not a process that reaches the totality of the metropolis of São Paulo. This process is verified in some districts, mainly, of São Paulo city. They are the first industrial districts of the city, of which genesis is in the last two decades of nineteenth century. The industrialization of these districts is related to a series of elements, among which stands out, without any doubt, the presence of the railroads. The city of São Paulo was cut by the railroads of the coffee, that took coffee production from the interior to the port of Santos. And it were, the districts of Sáo Paulo cut by railroads, that were industrialized from the end of last century. Among these neighborhoods, this article treats one: Água Branca. In that sense, the analysis of its singularities is necessary if an understanding of desindustrialization is wanted. But the singularities are not enough.
