Abstract

Due the profile of sailing, most practiced by upper and middle-class groups, it may seem strange that there are two clubs dedicated to this sport in a region currently marked by being a place of popular housing: the district of Ramos, Rio de Janeiro. Considering such clubs as signals of an important moment of the city's history regarding the occupation of the suburbs as well as the expansion of sporting initiatives, this study aims to discuss the Iate Clube de Ramos and the Carioca Iate Clube experiences in its early years. As the intention is to understand the public repercussion of its actions, especially regarding the territorial issue, as sources were used newspapers and magazines. The Diário Oficial helped to identify relationships with governmental agencies. It is a research developed on the frontier between Sport Geography and Sport History.
