Territory, agribusiness and startups: Agtechs in the innovation ecosystem of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais (Brazil)

Transformations in the capitalist mode of production, characterized by the process of financialization and the globalization, have resulted in multidimensional impacts, both on the dynamics of accumulation itself and on how capital and businesses operate within territories. In this context, the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship are articulated and become dominant, enabling the emergence of new business models that integrate innovation and finance (a role currently associated with startups) as well as new geographic situation, which can be identified in specific territorial contexts. This paper examines these processes through an analysis of the innovation ecosystem in the municipality of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais (Brazil), with a specific focus on the presence and strategies of agtechs (startups dedicated to agribusiness). The services offered by such companies were evaluated, as well as how these agents align with the conditions and imperatives of contemporary technological innovation, and their value creation in the market.
