Beyond housing, far below of appropriation: housing production and representation in the central districts of the city of São Paulo

Analyzing the temporal cut of the last 15 years, with regard to housing in the central districts of the city of São Paulo, it is necessary to refer to the role of popular
movements, especially those who struggle for housing in an area whose meaning for the
present discussion is fundamental when we want to highlight the concepts of private ownership, appropriation of space and social function of property. The representations
of space, constructed, destroyed and reconstructed in the time line, occupy also central
place in this discussion. The contradiction shown by the numbers in the production of
housing in the central areas of the city of São Paulo, in recent years, reinstates the
question of the inviolability of private property in Brazil. The struggle of these popular
movements is now confronted with the recent political transformations that the country
has been going through and suggest that the resistance must continue and be enlarged
