When a major asset is perceived as a burden: re-examining the tribulations of a disciplinary field which was presented as a bridge between natural and social sciences

From “sustainable development” to “global climate change” through a diversified set of environmental problems, the links between “nature” and “society” are currently at the top of the scientific and political agenda worldwide. In light of this, one might think that geographers should have much to say about the problems afflicting so many people around the planet; after all, the project of building a bridge between the study of nature and the study of society lies in the very heart of geography’s disciplinary identity and tradition. Yet, curiously enough, most geographers give the impression of deserting debates around those issues. Few present-day geographers seem to believe that the dialogue between different types of knowledge represented by the ideal of a “bridge between natural and social sciences” is still worthwhile. How did we get to this situation? Is it irreversible, if only partially? If so, under which circumstances? With probably unparalleled potency, geographical knowledge, in spite of its weaknesses and contemporary impasses, can demonstrate how much the terms “nature” and “society,” however unavoidable they may be, have inescapably relational contents, so that they not necessarily corroborate any dualistic thinking. In many ways, perhaps the relevance and prestige of geography will increasingly depend on geographers’ ability to explore such potential again, paying due attention to “hybrid” themes and problems, though certainly on new epistemological and theoretical foundations.
