Theoretical-methodological basis of natural heritage – the role of Geography and Geomorphology to the creation of nature areas

To list an object as cultural heritage means to recognize and to protect the symbolic meaning of collective importance. The São Paulo public agency of culture (Condephaat) considered the nature attributes as part of cultural heritage. The institutional acceptance of nature as a cultural object had theoretical and ideological resistance. It was necessary to set up concise arguments to protection of nature in a cultural agency. This article analyzed the qualitative and quantitative structure of natural heritage in Condephaat. Some Nature Heritage Areas were based on geomorphologic attributes. It was examined the contribution of Geography in construction of theoretical and methodological references. The support to survey was the institutional documents, the bibliographic about natural heritage, and the collection of data an information about the objects listed in cultural organism.
