Abstract

Originally published in the Nineteenth Century, in the April-June 1888 issue, this text by Kropotkin will compose with modifications the chapter 3 of the book Fields, Factories and Workshops from 1898. In this article, the anarchist geographer dedicates himself to economic geography, demonstrating the relationship between industrial and agricultural work, as well as demonstrating the importance of handcraft and small industry, even in the face of the industrial system, whose characteristic is large-scale production and the abundant use of machinery. Kropotkin expands his critique of the social division of labor and the deprivation of the means of production, in addition to identifying a trend towards urban-industrial spatial spread among the most dynamic countries from a productive and social point of view.
