Abstract

This paper is on the electoral geography based on the study of electoral volatility in Brazilian presidential elections between 1989 and 2006 on spatial unit of Brazilian municipalities. The electoral volatility was calculated by the inter-bloc volatility index (Bartolini and Mair, 1990) in four periods: 1989/1994, 1994/1998, 1998/2002, and 2002/2006. The Brazilian municipalities were identified and classified into five groups according to the incidence of high volatility in the period 1989 to 2006. Finally, is analyzed the correlation index between electoral volatility and percentage of rural municipalities.
