Abstract

This article seeks to expose and analyze some aspects of the theoretical-metho- dological discussion about the nature of geographical science that are present in the work The Nature of Geography (1939) written by Richard Hartshorne (1899- 1992). We’ll review the definition of the purpose of Geography formulated by the author and then discuss some reflections offered by Hartshorne regarding the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the discipline. The analysis of these issues will be made from a wider concern with the understan- ding of the role of the author in academic Geography of the twentieth century and with the operation of constituting mechanisms of the scientific field in his work.
