Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the dynamics existing in the chain of social and eco- nomic activity extraction plant and its role as an agent responsible for the growth potential of desertified areas in Cariri. The decrease of forest areas in Brazil, par- ticularly in the Caatinga, is intrinsically related to the form of territorial occupa- tion and the production model established in rural Brazil since the early colonial era. In the Northeast, historically, there is a high dependence of the population, especially the poor, in relation to forest products as a source of energy, both for domestic consumption and for economic purposes. In this case, the marketing of these products earns strong contour, to meet the domestic (state), but also the export market, especially the neighboring state of Pernambuco.
