In the 1990s, new subjects and technical possibilities for mapping appear in the intensifying modernizations and conflicts over the use of territory between hegemonic and counter-hegemonic agents. Highlighting the affirmation of critical cartography in the USA and social cartography in Brazil, fundamental tools in the dispute for spatial representations in social struggles. We focus the cartography of social action by Ana Clara Torres Ribeiro, which has been developed on two main fronts: experiences in schools; and focus groups with social movements. Presenting research results from two experiences, one school and the other with a focus group, highlighting two contributions of this method: (i) focus on the action and the subject of the action, understanding of the meanings of the action; (ii) possibility of working with struggles for the use of the territory by more diffuse subjects of action in urban contexts, and not only in those over traditionally occupied lands.
