The communication of the intentions of the architecture design with users demands a participatory process with intelligible approach strategies with the different stakeholders. Simulation through different types of three-dimensional models can contribute to this communication, and this type of representation has the advantage of having a language that is more intelligible to the layman and close to the object that will be built. This paper presents the development of two forms of low cost three-dimensional simulations - one with physical characteristics and the other in a virtual environment - that could contribute to a participatory design process. The article reports the application of a simulation dynamics with two groups of potential users of social housing, whose objective is to verify the potential of each model to collect information from these groups about the designed environment. The method used to evaluate this potential of the models is developed through a simulation dynamics and techniques of cognitive walkthrough, verbal protocol, usability test, besides observations of the user’s behavior. The collected data allow to identify the advantages and limitations of the use of these procedures in the communication between social housing users and the designer during the initial stages of the architectural design process. The results indicate that the physical model associated with camera use allows a greater understanding of the set of environments, stimulating the user to propose more comprehensive changes in their configuration. The virtual model with images at 360 degrees enables a better understanding of aspects of layout, preferences for materials and lighting. We also identified user profiles that show ease or difficulty in using a particular instrument. The study's contribution is based on the recommendations of the use of the models and on the limitations identified during the process, helping to review procedures for future research that involve the participatory housing design process.
