Abstract

Descriptive representation is meant to make a given document easier to find. Catalogs, however, need standardization, and to achieve at least a basic level of it, professionals rely on manuals when creating records. The aim of this article is to highlight the series A Handbook for the cataloguer, published in 1902 by Adelaide Hasse with the aim of facilitating the insertion of government documents in catalogs, and to describe part 1. The study used bibliographic and documentary research. Bibliographic research supported the theoretical and historical investigation of the two manuals, while documentary research was used in the actual analysis. A descriptive analysis was adopted, covering not only the manual’s structure but also its target audience, language, purpose, specificity, organization, document types, and year of publication. Because it is a manual rather than a rule code, Handbook for the Cataloguer – Part 1 is easy to understand and arranged so as not to confuse readers. It streamlines processing work and supplies the information needed to carry out the procedures.
